Analysis

The idea of dragging sports and different fields into the domain of a nation’s politics is not surprising. In India, cricket is the representation of this idea. The playground itself transforms no less into a battlefield whenever matches between India and Pakistan happen. It is also present in the case of other sports. But the admiration for cricket in India and Pakistan expresses this problematic idea more vividly. When sports merge with a nation’s politics, it goes beyond competition and raises complications. One of the basic notions of sports is respect towards the opponent. Both teams or individuals work hard enough to become eligible for a competition, so winning or losing relies on the matter of their effort. Yet despite all these, social media often represent sports as a war cry.

Like most mainstream movies, the film creates a match between India and Pakistan. By developing a background story of terrorism in connection with Pakistan, the war-like ambiance in the boxing ring is further enhanced, and a gruesome viewpoint is created. People are made to gulp down these movies spreading the message of terrorism in connection with Pakistan, while anyone can be a terrorist. The sheer hatred portrayed through the film carries this gruesome point, which can be fatal to people’s perception of another nation. It also goes on to define this approach in nationalist fervor. The primary essence of sports gets lost when this middle ground is created and focused more than the match. Not only does it build the perception of the people but it also instigates the border between people. Politics has borderline due to historical reasons, but fields like sports, arts, etc. are devoid of distinction.

Furthermore, showing that Victor is an ordinary person turned spy and boxer prompts people to act viciously. People learn and grow from different cultures. But instead of doing that, boxing is portrayed as something that distinguishes them and brings them apart. Situating the story in the context of the terrorist attacks on Mumbai on 26 November 2008 plays a crucial role in nurturing this problematic viewpoint. In this case, the contextual expression frames the story and sets the perspective, especially using contemporary politics. It makes boxing or any other sport no less different than politics, thus disrespecting these fields and disfiguring people.

What’s there?

  • Distorted representation of the nation
  • Boxing, politics, and boundary
  • Problematic theme

What’s not there?

  • Meaningful story

Verdict

The film focuses on many atrocious perspectives. Other than the content, the narration, acting, editing, etc, lack potential.
