Plot The story involves the patriotism of 18th - century revolt which is a well – known phase of Indian freedom struggle. And here in Pune, plague attacked the city population as an epidemic. To provide help and prevent the spread of disease, a plague committee formed, and its chairman was W.C. Rand, who was an Indian Civil Services officer in British India. But as the history depicted the cruel British rule in India, its cruelty was also showed at that time when people were dying because of plague.

The measures taken to curb the epidemic included forced entry into private houses, forced disrobing and examination of occupants (also women) by British officers in public, evacuation to hospitals and segregation camps, damaging personal articles and preventing movement from the city. These measures were adjudged repressive by the natives of Pune and on the other side; W.C. Rand was ignoring all the complaints regarding the ‘humiliating treatment’. And that’s the whole story how W.C. Rand paid for his cruelty!

The three Chapekar Brothers – Balkrishna Hari Chapekar, Damodar Hari Chapekar, and Vasudev Hari Chapekar assassinated that one who was responsible for the humiliation of the natives of Pune and their sufferings. But the courage of those patriots is yet untold, and that untold story gets unfold in the film.

Analysis: The whole team worked a lot, we must say! To create a patriot drama without harming its smoothness and without showing off the ‘heroic style’ is indeed a tough job!

Star Performances: There are not so many well – known actors in the film except Veteran actors Govind Namdev and Om Puri, it is a story of unknown heroes playing by unknown actors but not a single person loosen the grip on his / her role. They all did a professional job.

What’s There? Unrevealed patriotism gets revealed in the film. The revolt by the Chapekar Brothers was marked as a major one in the history of Indian freedom struggle but still was not in the eyes of Indians. Most of us know about the revolt led by Bhagat Singh and Mangal Pandey very well but are unaware by the names of ‘Chapekar Brothers.’ Obviously, film popularizes the names, courage and role of Chapekar Brothers in the history of Indian freedom struggle.

What’s not there? Masala lovers will miss the spice and salt in the movie because it’s a biopic, not a commercial one though some of the Bollywood biopics had item songs and literary ‘hot’ scenes such as Azhar and Bhag Milkha Bhag, but it’s a biopic of a diverge kind. Only patriotism and struggle for freedom, NO MASALA!

Verdict: If you want to watch a film, much different from Adult Comedy and Romantic Drama, then you should book the tickets for ‘Chapekar Brothers’ – A film surrounded by those historical characters and situations that left an impact on the history of Indian freedom struggle.
