Analysis
Taboo subjects are always shown in a commercial format in Bollywood films. It is usually done to attract a large audience. Ayushmann Khurana has made his name by starring in taboo subject films shown with a commercial lens. The LGBTQ+ community has always been demonstrated in a regressive lens, across the world but slowly and steadily we are improving and trying to show the stories with honesty, sincerity, and sensitivity and have delivered some good films too Badhai do, Kapoor & Sons being the best. This film also tries to bring that love and sensitivity but gets trapped in the family drama. Both the leads come from different cultural backgrounds and are constantly fighting the conflict. Sunny Singh brings out the internal struggle of Amar well, and Prem is supportive; their chemistry is not very top-notch but not wrong either. The cinematography is incredible and also shows a clear contrast between a foreign city and a traditional home. Now let's get to brass tacks. The film is messy with its narrative. The love story should be the focus not the cultural backgrounds, the movie in the second half is a loud version of 2 States, which disconnects you from the film. The film is way too focused on the cultural dynamics than the complexities of the relationship. Amar Prem Ki Prem Kahani is a half baked romance with unnecessary screen time to the cultural dynamics.

Verdict
Amar Prem Ki Prem Kahani is a decent film that doesn't scratch the surface with the queer relationship but is more focused on the family drama. It can be watched on a random binge.
