Plot
The plot follows Sophia, who is married to an older, wealthy spice merchant, Cornellis. Her husband commissions Jan, a young painter to paint a portrait of her in order to immortalise his young wife. Jan and Sophia have an affair, unbeknownst to her husband, which is uncovered by her maid Maria, who is in courtship with a fishmonger, Willem. The story continues with several clever plot twists and nuanced references to the Tulip Wars. Will Sophia and Jan elope in the wake of their newfound love? How will they escape the clutches of Cornellis? What role will Maria play in their blossoming romance? The plot goes on to answer these questions.
Star Performances
Alicia Vikander delivers with her performance, playing Sophia artfully and proving her mettle in this role. Dane DeHaan's is the perfect piece to complete this pair's budding romance. Christoph Waltz plays Cornellis and does a decent job at it. Holliday Grainger and Jack O'Connell are the ideal second lead duo needed to move the story forward and prove useful in the plot. Analysis
The story is much like any historical drama. One can see the "mania" revolving around the Tulip mania, with frequent references to the rising demand for these flowers and bulbs. However, history buffs may be disappointed to know that the movie focuses more on this whirlwind romance than on the Tulip Fever event itself. Alicia Vikander plays her part remarkably, proving her prowess in the historical romance genre. She is easy to sympathize with, which makes her rendition of a woman who just wants to feel love all the more believable. Dane DeHaan does an excellent job as Jan, and the pair's chemistry is also solid. Jack O'Connell and Holliday Grainger dutifully play their roles, which makes it hard to decide which pair to adore more. The Abbess of St. Ursula seems to be a fitting role for the actress Judi Dench, and she makes the most of her scenes. The melancholy undertones provided by the artful music and cinematography by Danny Elfman and Eigil Bryld make this film shine brighter. The plot is complex and perfect for audiences looking for a new historical drama to watch.
