Plot
The film is based on the book “All The Truth Is Out: The Week Politics Went Tabloid”. The film follows Senator Gary Hart, played by Hugh Jackman, Hart’s political career and his fall to disgrace. In 1984, Hart finished second in the Democratic Party’s presidential race but in 1987 he was the front-runner. Hart’s campaign managers want him to open up about himself to the public because he seemed too reserved. Since there were rumors about his marital problems and infidelity going around, a reporter asked Hart questions about his marriage. This offended Hart and he exclaimed that the reporters should just follow his every move to find out, but they would be disappointed since he was a boring man. During one such incident, while reporters were following him, they found Hart with a young woman named Donna Rice. These pictures endangered Hart’s career and marriage. The film follows this incident which made an indelible mark on American politics.
Star Performance
Hugh Jackman gives a good performance as Gary Hart, and perfectly portrays his closed-off personality and intellect. Vera Farmiga, J.K. Simmons, Mamoudou Athie, and Molly Ephraim also deliver good performances.
Analysis
The film does not feel like a heated political thriller but leans more towards describing how the media ruined Hart’s career. Gary Hart’s character seems under-developed because his emotional state or reasoning is not discussed in the film.
What’s There?
• A stellar cast with Hugh Jackman, Vera Farmiga, J.K. Simmons, Mark O’Brien, Molly Ephraim, Chris Coy, Alex Karpovsky, and Josh Brener

What’s Not There?
• The film feels more like a drama than a political thriller
• The storyline is boring and disappointing
Verdict
The film might be a good watch for drama and political genre enthusiasts. Also, it would be a good watch for Hugh Jackman’s fans.
