Plot

In a dystopian 2020, human boxers have been replaced by robots. After losing one such robot in a fight, ex-boxer Charlie Kenton reassembles another robot for a prestigious championship, in a bid to reunite with his son Max. Can Charlie and his boxing robot win against all odds?

Star Performances

The bonding between the characters of Hugh Jackman and Dakota Goyo is the highlight of this film.

Another plus point is the visual effects, that make this futuristic drama look believable.

Analysis

‘Real Steel’ is one film that does not demand too much from the viewer. All it provides is classic entertainment, with a futuristic touch. Many would find it hard to believe that the director is the same guy who has created a memorable franchise like the ‘Night of the Museum’! But Shawn Levy does deliver a winner with this one.

Set in a time, when human boxing is replaced by robots, the movie switches between science fiction and human drama. Nowhere does it feel out of place, or bizarre. The plot may not be something extraordinary, but the CGI more than makes up for it!  The team supervising the visual effects has seen to it the audience feels connected with the fighting robots. The motion capture technique used in this film is genuine, and not jarring to the eyes.

On the acting front, Hugh Jackman has added another feather to his cap as the ex-boxer Charlie. The unlikely bond he shares with his estranged son Charlie, played by Dakota Goyo, is also something worth watching. This very bond between the two is the main highlight of the movie, and some might even say the futuristic plot was not that much needed.

However, the movie is not flawless. For starters, there is no proper antagonist. The buildup of some characters is quite half-hearted, Kevin Durand’s Ricky being one such example.

What's There?

  • Great CGI
  • Impressive Motion Capture Technique
  • Good direction by Shawn Levy
  • Great performances from Hugh Jackman and Dakota Goyo

What's Not There?

  • Weak Antagonist
  • No proper development of characters

Verdict

‘Real Steel’ is a family entertainer with a futuristic twist. The plot might not be out of the blue, but the visual effects pack a punch. The acting performances, especially that of Hugh and Dakota, are the cherry on the icing. You can watch this with your family for sure!
