This movie has Daniel Day-Lewis’ acting genius and Paul Thomas Anderson’s dark undertones of control and dominance with Jonny Greenwood’s flagrant score. Combine all of these and it makes Phantom Thread a worthy Oscar nominee.
Plot
Set in post-war London, this movie revolves around the work and life of an exclusive couturier, Reynolds, and explores his relations with his sister and a young waitress with whom he falls in love with eventually. The movie manifests their nuanced relationship and its struggle, as both participants push and pull on their bond.
Analysis
Lewis’ character, Reynolds, is an arrogant and self-righteous man who thinks the world would and should work according to him. He still suffers from the trauma of his mother's death, and that is portrayed very clearly in the way his relationship works with women. His sister Cyril, played by Lesley Manville, is also a formidable character. She happens to be the only one who can control him. She manages the business side of things at The House Of Woodcock, his brother’s and her partnership venture into a very successful and elite designing house. The movie bathes in control, but Reynolds’ death grip on his daily routine is challenged when he meets a young waitress, Alma, who becomes his love interest and his muse. She is the perfect match for his antagonizing figure. Alma gives as good as she gets. Right from the beginning, we can feel that their relationship is doomed. And the end leaves us all stunned.
Star Performance
Phantom Thread is reportedly Lewis’ last movie before he retires, and what a way to exit. His acting is pure ingenuity. He becomes the character so thoroughly that we don’t see even a trace of the actor playing it. Vicky Krieps Vicky Krieps is a Luxembourgish actress who has st >> Read More... , who plays the serpent beneath the rose role of Alma, also delivers an astounding performance. The quietly shy but dangerous role suits her. Manville’s portrayal of the stiff-spined sister is very exacting, but she plays that very elegantly. The music by Jonny Greenwood adds another dimension to the movie. It very much becomes another main character. It flows fluidly into every aspect of the film.
