This movie is based on the video game series “Monster Hunter” developed by the company ‘Capcom.’ This movie has been in the mind of Anderson since 2012, who liked the video game series. Later in 2018, the film’s production started with the announcement of Capcom. The film went into live-action and ended filming in December 2018 in Cape Town, South Africa. The movie was accepted well by the public and grossed $44 million worldwide. It, however, received mixed reviews from critics.

Plot

In a world where savage monsters and humans co-exist, a hunter trained to hunt and kill all these deadly creatures is separated from his crew when their ship is assaulted by an underground monster. In parallel to this on Earth, U.S. Army Ranger Captain Natalie Artemis and her team are searching for a missing group of soldiers in an abandoned desert when a sudden storm opens a portal to the other world. The story follows Artemis and her team, who navigate through all the monsters and fight against them in a deadly survival world.

Star Performance

Milla Jovovich delivered a fantastic performance in this action movie. Tony Jaa was adept at delivering his stunts. Clifford Harris and Meagan Good also impressed the audience with their acting.

Analysis

The entire first hour of the movie is set at a slow pace, almost agonizing, and there’s not even a sense of aesthetic till this point. Along with the missing plot development, the movie also fails to provide minimal action scenes expected from a proclaimed ‘action-thriller.’ That said, the film progresses into an action scene after an hour and 20 minutes, by which most viewers are already fast asleep in their seats. Although the actors performed well, due to poor editing, the movie couldn’t gain the positive response it intended. Moreover, the design and graphics of the ‘deadly monsters’ wasn’t detailed enough to pass as satisfactory.

The movie had action sequences and visual effects, but the directing and editing weren’t pleasing to many. The concept of the “New World” wasn’t adequately described in the movie, and ideas of that world were very vague, often leaving the viewers in confusion. About two-thirds into the film, the routine plot stays routine and new characters enter, making an even more irritable presence to the audience. However, the climax seemed to be bright and creative, pole opposite to how the movie was progressing till now. Either way, since the movie ended with almost an ambiguous ending and teasing for a second part which is most likely not coming, critics named this movie ‘boring and a waste of time,’ but a few named it ‘worth passing the time,’ both seemingly true.

What’s There?

  • The actors did a great job in delivering action and performance.
  • A new plot into the world of fantasy and monsters
  • A quick watch of monster-hunting

What’s Not There?

  • Unclear explanation of the ‘New World’ and routine plot
  • Slow pace and incompetent editing
  • Poor directing and no direct adaption of the game.

Verdict

For the fans of the game, this movie was a huge disappointment and not up to the mark. For casual viewers, the film was introduced as a new plot, but the progression was basic and nothing much to look forward to in the film. Only the CGI and weapon usage was impressive, while the action scenes were only good to some extent. So, it’s highly likely you wouldn’t like the movie if you start with great expectations. You can just watch it as a casual time pass.
