Daniel Radcliffe is a popular English actor who rose to fame after bagging the title role in the Harry Potter films. He was born as Daniel Jacob Radcliffe on July 23, 1989 at West London, England to Alan George Radcliffe and Marcia Jeannine Gresham. His mother works as a casting agent and involved in various movies for BBC network such as Walk Away and I Stumble and The Inspector Lynley Mysteries.


Daniel started showing his passion for acting when he was five. At 10, he was debuted in the 1999 film, David Copperfield which was adapted from the novel of Charles Dickens, where he acted as the young David. Daniel studied at Sussex House School and City of London School. Going to school was not easy for Daniel after his film Harry Potter was released, since some of his fellow students became intimidating. His career is taking most of his time so he could not attend school regularly. Daniel continued his studies by obtaining on-set tutors. He said he is not really good at school and find it really hard to study. But he got A grades on his AS-level exams in year 2006. Later, the young actor decided to stop studying and he never attended college or any university. He said, he already knew how to act and write and it will be hard to attain the usual experience of a college life.


In year 2009, he was asked by Producer David Heyman to audition as Harry Potter for the film adaptation based on the best-selling book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J. K. Rowling. Rowling has been looking for a British actor to epitomize Harry Potter’s character. But Daniel’s parents doesn’t want him to audition since the seven films will be shot in Los Angeles. But when Director Chris Columbus saw Daniel’s video in David Copperfield, he wanted him to essay the role of Harry Potter. After 8 months and many auditions, he was selected to bag the role, but his parents turned the offer down since it involves shooting in L.A. But Warner Brothers offered Daniel two movie contract and will shoot in UK.


The ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ was released in year 2001 as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The film became a major success and he receive positive reviews. He got noticed and even got a 7-figure salary for playing the role. The film got a $974 Million ticket sales and became the 2001’s top-grossing film. A year after, Daniel did the second part of the series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Once again, he received positive accolades but the critics have different opinions on the film as a whole. But the film still got a total of $878 Million earning and became the second top-grossing film in 2002, next to The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. In 2004, the third part of the series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban acquired the highest critical acclaim and earn $795.6 Million internationally. But the film ranks the lowest at the box office among all the series. In 2005, the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire sets record on its opening weekend. It grossed $896 Million internationally and became the second highest grossing among all the Harry Potter films. In 2007, Daniel did the fifth part, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix which portrays his return to Hogwarts. The film received positive responses from the critics and press. He got nominated for his performance and received the Best Male Performance at the National Movie Award in year 2008. Daniel along with his co-star, Grint and Watson had their hands, wands and feet imprint in Hollywood’s Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. In year 2009, the series continued and the sixth film in the series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has been released. The film grossed $933 Million ticket sales and received positive reviews among the film critics. He received nominations at the MTV Movie Awards 2010. The final book was divided into two parts which was filmed back to back and lasted for one year and halted in June 2010. On the last shooting day, Daniel openly sobbed. The ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 1)’ was released in November, earning about $950-Million. The ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 2)’ was internationally released in Australia on July 2011. The film was also considered as the biggest midnight release, grand opening on its first day and weekend. It was also the 4th top grossing film of all time, grossing a total of $1.3 Billion around the world.


The young actor stated that he would never be able to pull him out of the character and that he is very proud to be part of the film. However, despite his affirmative feelings towards the films, Daniel is not interested in doing another Harry Potter movies and stated that 10 years is quite a long time to spend playing a single character role.


He made his debut through the 2001 film, The Tailor of Panama which was adapted on the novel by John le Carre’ in 1996. The film was commercially successful. After a year, he did his stage debut through the comedy play, The Play What I Wrote, under the direction of Kenneth Branagh. He was also seen in the lead role as Maps in the drama film, December Boys in 2007. In the same year, Daniel along with Carey Mulligan and David Haig was starred in television drama show, My Boy Jack which was aired on ITV network for the Remembrance Day. Many critics praised Daniel’s performance in the show. When he reaches the age of 17, he acted in a lead role onstage; he did the play, Equus by the English screenwriter, Peter Shaffer. The film had an advanced sales of £1.7 Million and the actor appeared on nude scene. His performance was highly accredited and critics were captivated by the shade and power of his character in the play.


Daniel is also the voice behind a character in an episode of the animated sitcom, The Simpsons in 2010. He also acted in the revival of ‘How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying’ in the Broadway, as J. Pierrepont Finch in year 2011. He won the Drama Desk Awards and he was nominated in the Drama League Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award. He left the show in January 2012. Daniel also bagged the role of Arthur Kipps, a lawyer in the British horror film, The Woman In Black; a film that is based on Susan Hill’s novel in 1983. Later, he was seen in the biographical drama film, Kill Your Darlings. He also did the Irish-Canadian film, The F Word and the American-Canadian fantasy thriller film, Horns. 

Daniel suffered a mild form of developmental coordination disorder in real-life. He sometimes have trouble in doing simple things like writing. He dated his co-star, Erin Darke of Kill Your Darlings in 2012.
