Plot
The story starts in the year 1996, where 13-year-old Stevie lives in Palms, Los Angeles with his sole parent Dabney, and his physically abusive older brother Lan. Stevie rides by Motor Avenue Skateshop one day, takes in the exalting relationship of the skateboarding enthusiasts outside, and comes back the next day. After trading money with his brother for a skateboard back home, he takes the board to a shop and establishes friends with Young Skater Ruben, who introduces him to the other individuals of team. The quiet “fourth grade, “the talkative leader Ray, and the loudmouth “Fuckshit”. Stevie finds himself drawn to the group regardless being an unfamiliar and unexperienced skater and would like to model their risky, bold actions, and disruptive mindset. Ray calls Stevie “sunburn” in a conversation, and Ruben gets upset for having being accepted in the group. In the next scene, Stevie trips over an open area located between two rooftops while attempting a skateboard trick and hits his head hard. Even though Stevie is determined to remain with the group, Dabney begins becoming concerned about his unexpected carelessness and the new people he has met. Stevie notices a heated swap between Ian and Fuckshit, but Ian proceeds off before a fight can begin because he appears uneasy by the group. Stevie begins drinking, smoking, and doing the drug experiments and having undergone the apparent age disparity. Next, we see him getting his first kiss and getting more physically involved with Estee, a senior teenage girl, at a party. The story proceeds with a twisting and entertaining story.
Star Performance
The main character Stevie played his role exceptionally well, as we watched his character develop, we see him deal with domestic violence, seek acceptance and friendship, and deals with peer pressure. Each of the core characters depicted is shown to be dealing with their own personal struggles and social issues. The way they capture feeling with very little dialogue is genius. Also, an impressive list of needle drops is heard on the soundtrack. Altogether, the performances and cinematography are the most vital elements of the movie.
Verdict
This movie has a plot which is true to the life of teenagers who skate. It’s a lovely movie that many teenagers who grew up in the hood and skated because it’s the only thing to love in their lives will appreciate. If you live this life then all these characters in the film are people you know and have met and it’s very realistic. But despite this film being a coming-of-age film about kids growing up, it is not a film for kids. If you are genuinely passionate about something this movie is sure to touch you on a deeper level as characters feel their delight from their passion of skateboarding; that is so relatable. Altogether, the film being accurate and emotionally captivating, this movie is perfect.
