A vampire story or just another vampire tale? A tale that deals with the return of an imprisoned vampire to reconcile the past events and protect his dysfunctional descendants. " Dark Shadows Click to look into! >> Read More... ”, directed by Tim Burton Tim Burton was born on August 25th, 1958 at Burban >> Read More... , kind of wins the elusive prize all the filmmakers are clutching for: the film successfully whelms the audience.

Plot:

The plot deals with the return of Barnabas, played by the ever suave, Johnny Depp An iconic award-winning-actor that doesn’t watches >> Read More... , to his ancestral home where their family business was flourishing in the past and has currently lost its glory. Barnabas enters in a state of total turmoil caused by Angelique Bouchard, played by Eva Green She’s not a usual typecast that will be defined by >> Read More... , who also happens to be the witch responsible for transforming Collins into a vampire.

The story gains pace with Barnabas returning and reviving the family business in a disguised identity and façade, and the real one only known to some. A series of events add to the canvas of the story where Elizabeth, the matriarch of the Collins family, hires Victoria Winters as the governess of Collinsport- their family business. There is a story weaving between many characters that exist in the movie i.e., David, Elizabeth’s nephew, his live-in psychiatrist Julia Hoffman, his father Roger, and Elizabeth’s daughter Carolyn.

Barnabas has a history and a story of lost love, which he rekindles with Victoria. Barnabas is back after 196 years from the coffin where he was plotted to be buried by Angelique and is determined to avenge his family against Angelique, who, unaware of his identity, tries to buy him off and fails in-spite of repeated attempts. The Collins business is flourishing, and they throw a lavish party to reintroduce the family to the townsfolk. A series of events unfold from here revealing Victoria’s and Barnabas' identity, causing Julia’s death and Victoria’s running away. The climax features Angelique trapping Barnabas into a coffin from which David frees him later. It’s a tale of revenge and revamping of Collins and Angelique, leading towards a happy ending for the Collins, and an enchanting love story between Barnabas and Victoria.

Analysis:

The film is based on the gothic television soap opera, ‘Dark Shadows’ . It’s a visual treat mixed with jam-packed humor, yet lacks a focused plot and depth into characters. The film and Tim Burton deliver exactly what was expected of them, neither a notch above nor below.

Star Performances:

All the actors deliver an ostensibly good performance, ranging from Johnny Depp to the amazing Helena Bonham, and the adorable Eva Green with the ever fake smile glued to her face. The actors manage to create an atmosphere of their own, which not only engages the audience with the story, but also moves them with every turn in the plot.

What's there?

1. The visuals are top-notch.The film is described as ‘whelmer’ by many.

2. The goth style, the Liverpool in 1760, and the star performances are all to be watched out for.

What's not there?

1. Tim Burton fails to find a symphony between the intentional jokes and unfazed gothic eerie.

Verdict:

In-spite of a lack in harmony, the movie more than fulfills the audience’s expectations. Besides the elegant ensemble, the star cast packed with memorable performances makes the film all the more a reasonably good watch.
