Plot

Barbie”, takes us on a voyage of self-discovery and self-respect. The “Stereotypical Barbie”, played by Margot Robbie, sets an unrealistic high bar for beauty and perfection. The filmmaker introduces the concept of an “ordinary Barbie”, who is proud of who she is and accepts herself with flaws and imperfections.

Star Performance

Margot Robbie flawlessly fits the character she is given. The blonde-haired, blue-eyed stunner radiates the kind of persistent, exaggerated optimism required for this, sugar-coated world. Ryan Gosling is a consistent scene-stealer as he revels in Ken’s fragility. He goes from Barbie’s needy, so-called, boyfriend to a strong man as he throws himself headlong into how he thinks a real man should behave.

Analysis

This film shows how the “Stereotypical Barbie” discovers herself and travels to the path of enlightenment, in the real world, as she shows some signs of being a human and wants to find out who is playing with her. She takes Ken, her insecure, obsessive beau, along with her. Ken, realizes masculinity in the real world. Will Ferell, CEO of Mattle, the company that created Barbie doll, goes behind the protagonist to put her in the Box(cage). The rest of the film beautifully shows the story Barbie is a visually dazzling comedy whose humour is smartly complemented by subversive storytelling

What’s There?

• This movie offers an excellent performance by the leads.
• This film has outstanding costume designing.
• It is a dramatic film that educates us with a good balance of humor and morality.

What’s not There?

• It is a highly satirical film but lacks logical consistency due to the odd blend of fantasized Barbieland and the realistic world.

Verdict

This film can be misunderstood as a “children’s movie”, but it is not. It might disappoint the audience that would watch this film for fun. This is a highly preaching movie about feminism, patriarchy, and politics. It effectively challenges stereotypes and promotes a self-compassionate perspective.
