‘Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil’ is once again in the news, but for a different reason.
This time, the movie is accused of plagiarism, but not by Ilaiyaraaja. The movie had one song, Azhagiya Laila, which was used without permission by the makers.
But what film did Azhagiya Laila belong to? In 1996, the song had come out in a Tamil movie ‘Ullathai Allitha’. Sundar C had directed this movie, while Sirpy had composed the song. Naturally, he was not happy with the way his song was misused. ‘Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil’ starred Basil Joseph and Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead roles, and after a successful run at the box office, was recently available for streaming on OTT platform Disney+ Hotstar.
However, unlike Ilaiyaraaja, Sirpy is fine with the song usage, as long as he is awarded the due credits for the same. Ilaiyaraaja was recently in the news for threatening to sue Lokesh Kanagaraj for the unauthorized usage of his songs in films like Vikram, ‘Leo’, and most recently ‘Coolie’.
Ilaiyaraaja was furious with the fact that ‘Coolie’, which stars Rajinikanth in the lead role, had used the ‘Disco Song’ without his prior permission. He threatened to sue the makers for unauthorized usage of his songs.
