Microsoft To End Support For Android Apps On Windows 11 News

Microsoft has decided to stop supporting Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA), a virtual machine that integrates Android apps with Windows 11 through the Amazon Appstore. Through an agreement with Amazon, the tech giant first received official support for the mobile apps nearly three years ago. Since then, it has regularly updated the platform. However, an announcement by Microsoft stated that they are ending support for WSA.

Microsoft labelled its note as ‘Important’ and sent it to the WSA for Android web page on Tuesday. The software giant highlighted that after March 5, 2025, the Amazon Appstore on Windows and all other applications associated with WSA will no longer be supported. Technical support will remain available to customers. Starting March 6, 2024, Windows 11 users can no longer search for Amazon Appstore or Android apps from the Microsoft Store.

Users can still use pre-installed apps until March 5, 2025, but downloading and installing new apps are no longer possible. There is no official statement about the reason for discontinuation, but a report by Ars Technica claims that Android app users on Windows 11 were relatively low. Most likely, this is because Microsoft couldn’t make a deal with Google, so they onboarded Amazon Appstore instead. However, the latter has a smaller app selection as compared to Google’s Play Store. Furthermore, most major app developers were already providing a Windows app or web-based interface separately. Perhaps that is the reason why WSA and native Android apps didn’t catch on.
