The Hindi Film Industry is a world of never-ending legendary movies. Despite their popularity on global levels, there are always a few undiscovered gems that deserve so much appreciation and acknowledgment. One such topic is this: movies where male leads were portrayed as mentally fragile. In our society, we usually expect men to be very balanced and controlled with their emotions. But, they are humans, too and they deserve to express themselves. So, here are some films that break the stereotype of men’s mental health.
A Death In The Gunj is a significant film in today’s world that consistently portrays men as headstrong, steadfast, and less emotional. Shutu, the protagonist here, is a not-so-peculiar man, and on a scale of emotions, he is heavier. Shutu is burdened with his family’s expectations and a constant fear of getting bullied by his family members. Movies like these break the stereotype of men being emotionless. The wrong impression that the male lead has to be always strong-headed and balanced is a myth and that is busted in this movie through the beautiful character portrayal by

Life carries on but, it takes time for Deepak to cope with his pain and there were instances when he was helpless and his sorrow knew no bounds. This character shows the realistic side of a man when he loses someone he loves. The movie is a genuine masterpiece, with every bit of reality depicted through the characters and dialogues. One should watch this film to witness how emotions can take a toll on someone be it a man or woman.
In this film, the protagonist suffers from schizophrenia. The movie portrays his treatment and how the love of his life, Shonali is always by his side throughout. Making this movie was a massive step towards crafting a sensitive and sensible character that portrays it through the protagonist. The film unfolds into various genres like a bit of thriller, and a bit of tension but mostly about the mental health of the protagonist.
We are all probably familiar with the beautiful songs of this film, but did we ever acknowledge the fact that this film upholds the mental health of Rahul, the male lead? No matter how things got better towards the end, he could not handle his mental health. That forced him to take such a step, causing him to lose his life. He was successful, popular, and had a loving partner, but due to a few failures, he could not help but end his life. Men in our society are expected to be weak and cowardly if they express their mental health. This is a movie to break these stereotypes.
In this masterpiece film, the male protagonist suffers from the loss of his own identity. As social beings, we are all affected and bothered by the identity we build for ourselves. Ved, the male lead portrays his self-sabotaging tendency throughout the cinema. No matter how much we talk or try to create awareness about mental health, it has different layers that we cannot fathom from the outside. Movies like these not only break stereotypes about mental health but also about how men are always wrongfully considered to be less emotional and less expressive about their feelings.

Very few films in Bollywood showed this kind of character played by a male. He meets a girl and she also happens to suffer from suicidal thoughts. They tackle and handle each other despite their challenges. The movie unfolds as a romantic one but the issue of mental health remains as the backdrop throughout.
In this masterpiece film, Jordan (played by Ranbir Kapoor) is a self-destructive musician with acute anger issues. His emotional turmoil within himself is shown throughout the film. He abides by his distorted idea of ‘pain begets art’. He believes and preaches that one must endure the pain of heartbreak to become a good and famous artist. He gets his heart broken, falls in love, chases his dreams, loses his beloved, and whatnot. Jordan is vulnerable and sensitive and has his share of sorrows. It is a beautiful tragedy portrayed by wonderful characters and heart-touching songs, poetries and dialogues.
Barfi (played by Ranbir Kapoor) is the male protagonist of the film. He is portrayed to be deaf and dumb, but a very optimistic individual. Barfi is very sensitive and soft and gets hurt by the departure of his love, Shruti. He cannot cope with the parting but he just wishes happiness for her. Although he was disabled in some ways, he did not let that become a barrier to converse or interact with anyone. Despite all this, he was very soft-hearted and sensible with his feelings.
Last but not least, the film that captured hearts like no other, is the only ‘3 Idiots’. Here, one of the protagonists, Raju Rastogi played a realistic role of a mentally weak student who is very scared of failure and disappointing everyone. Not only Raju, another student in this film named, Joy commits suicide for being unable to handle pressure. The scene is heart-breaking when Joy is found hanging from his ceiling fan and Raju attempts suicide but is saved later by his friends. The movie talks about the mental health of students, but also men in general.
