Muhammad Aurangzeb, also known as Qateel Shifai, was an Urdu poet and Lyricist. He was born on the 24th of December 1919 in Pakistan. He died on the 11th of July, 2001. He went on to adopt Qateel Shifai as his pen name in 1938. Qateel, because it was his pen name and Shifai, in honor of his Ustaad (teacher), Hakeem Mohammed Yahya Shifa Khanpuri, whom he considered a mentor. Qateel was called in 1946 by Nazir Ahmed to work as the assistant director of their monthly, Adab-e-Latif in Lahore. Subsequently, his first ghazal got published in the Lahore weekly, Star. His first film as a lyricist was the movie Teri Yaad (1948) in Pakistan. He eventually became a successful film lyricist after working under some famous lyricists of his time.
In 1994, Qateel was given the Pride of Performance award by the Government of Pakistan for his contribution to literature. He also received the much coveted Amir Khusrao Award in India. The Special Millennium Nigar Award was given to him in 1999 for his contributions to the Pakistan Film Industry. Qateel Shifai was working on his Autobiography, Ghungroo Toot Gaye, with his pupil, Naseem Chishti, during his last years. However, the project took a long time and was only published in 2006, 5 years after his death. It was published by his son, Naveed Qateel. The book sheds some light on the inside of the film industry.
