Ali Sardar Jafri was one of the most well-known and respected Urdu poet, critic, and film lyricist.. He was born on November 29, 1913, in Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh. He did his education at Aligarh Muslim University where he was exposed to the Communist ideology and was expelled due to political reasons. After which, he went to pursue his education from Zakir Husain College, Delhi University. He did his post-graduation from Lucknow University. Jafri married Sultana in January, 1948 and the couple was blessed with two sons. He published his first collection of short stories in 1938 called Manzil. In 1944, he came up with his first collection of poems called Parvaz.
He was also made the co-editor of Naya Adab, a literary journal. With his literary knowledge, he has contributed some of his great works to the world. Some of which are, Nai Duniya Ko Salaam, Khoon Ki Lakeer, Amn Ka Sitara, Asia Jaag Utha and many more. Being in the literary field for more than five decades definetly got him several awards like, in 1998 he became the third Urdu poet to receive Jnanpith Award. He also received the Padma Shri (1967), Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship (1971), the Gold Medal from the Pakistan Government for Iqbal Studies, and many more. Jafri took his last breath on August 1, 2000, in Mumbai, India.
