Gulam Ahmad Fazil Kashmiri is well known by his pen name Fazil Kashmiri. Fazil was born on 3 August 1916 in Jammu and Kashmir, India. Fazil Kashmiri was an incredible and outstanding Arabic, English, Urdu, and Persian poet, but he was interested primarily in Kashmiri literature. Fazil is recognised as a highly known Kashmiri poet and lyricist but is also known for his work as a Deputy Director Education Department, Jammu & Kashmir, India. Fazil completed his B.A. in Literature and Language from the University of Punjab, India.

Fazil is the father of three children, named Zeeshan Fazil, Prof (Dr) Taskeena Fazil, and Tamzeeda Fazil. He started his career in poetry from his high school days, when he was studying in 8th standard from Islamia High School, Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, India. Fazil published thirty-seven books in different genres like Ghazal, Nazm, Rubaʿi, Marsiya, Naʽat, Manqabat, Leela and many others. He later wrote a poem in 1936, named Kral-e-Koor (Potter’s Lass) and this poem was published in S. P. College’s magazine in the Pratap bulletin.

Fazil was inspired by a Kashmiri romantic poet Rasul Mir Shahabadi and he wrote a naat in memory of Rasul, and named it Saghar-e-Masti. Some of his books’ names are Japji Sahab Asul Mahu Kashmiri Manzoor Tarjuma in 1975, Krishn Leela in 1984, Shri Sukhmani Sahab in 1986 and many more. Fazil also wrote Islamic poetry and he wrote religious poetry in praise of the Islamic prophet, Muhammad and named it Anwar-e-Mohammadi the 14th edition of this poetry was released in 2013 by Adbee Markaz Kamraz Fazil also translated Guru Granth Sahib (a Sikhism holy book) into Kashmiri and Urdu, and languages and received the Harmony Award in 1993 from the prime minister of India.

Fazil is a preacher, Scholar, a patriot and an educationist. Fazil has written many poems such as Love of Seasons, Autumn, Stephard Girl, Washer Woman, Beautiful Dal Lake and various poems for children, and many scenarios in the form of sensitivity in Kashmiri aesthetics. Fazil also received the Sahitya Academy Award in 1990 for his work Kashur Sarmaya. In 2004, he received the State Cultural Academy Award from the government of Jammu and Kashmir for his recognition in Kashmiri literature. Fazil passed away on 11 July 2004 in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. In memory of him, there is an award named after him by the Jammu and Kashmir government named Fazil Memorial Award. It was awarded by the Fazil Memorial Committee to the Kashmiri writers for their incredible contribution to Kashmiri literature and language.
