Vakkalanka Sarala was born on 8 August 1927 in Madras. She was the daughter of Sundaramma and Gopala Rao. Sundaramma, her mother, was also a vocal musician during her lifetime. Vakkalanka was an established singer in the Telugu film industry who voiced the song Kadu Suma Kala Nahi Suma in the movie Keelugurram. In the 1940s she volunteered as an assistant music director in the Hindi Department of Gemini Studio. In addition to this, Sarala also worked on the song Iti Tiyani Vennela Rei in Anjali Devi’s debut film Balaraju (1948) and Palletooru (1952). Another modest effort of Sarala is her contribution to the movie Boy King, released in 1948, for which she sang the song Tiyanivennela Rei Edabayanyi Vennela Haii.
