He completed his schooling at CBM School, Visakhapatnam, Andra Pradesh. From his initial days, Kumar was encouraged by his father as well as by his headmistress. He started his career in flute from All India Radio. Kumar was in the ninth grade at that time. He went on to pursue vocal Carnatic Classical music at AU College of Fine Arts.Â
Kumar showcased his talent in his first film, My Dear Kuttichathan. He has extensively collaborated with A. R. Rahman in movies like Premikudu, Thiruda Thiruda, Bombay. Eventually, in 2005, he migrated to Mumbai. His work with other artists such as Ilayaraja, Pritam, Shankar–-Ehsaan–Loy, Sajid–, and Salim–Sulaiman is appreciated widely. He has performed with British guitarist and composer John McLaughlin. He showcased his musical presence in movies such as Roja (1992), Taal (1999), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Dhoom (2004), Jab We Met Click to look into! >> Read More... In 2010, he performed at the opening of the Commonwealth Games. In the same year, he performed with A. R. Rahman and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. In 2014, he participated in the London Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. His private albums include Never Say Goodbye (2006), Café Fluid (2010), and Silence Is Bliss (2015).Â
