Vidhyadhar Gokhale was a politician, writer and also an editor of a Marathi newspaper. He was a Marathi playwright and did editing for the newspaper called Loksatta from Maharashtra, India. Gokhale was born on January 4, 1924 in Amravati, Maharashtra. His father’s name was Sambhajirao Gokhale. His father was a leader of the Indian National Congress. Vidhyadhar Gokhale completed his studies in Amravati and went to Mumbai in 1944. In post-graduation, he holds degrees in Marathi and Sanskrit.
He used to teach at the General Education Society’s school in Kurla. After training in Kurla, he became a journalist. During this phase, he was the editor of a Marathi weekly newspaper. As a passionate playwright, he is credited with the revival of the musical Nataks (Sangeet Nataks). From 1960 to 1983, Gokhale writes 66 songs, and 60 plays for Sangeet Nataks. He presents varied themes like mythological, historical and social issues in such beautifully ways. One of his popular novels is Jhanjhawat. As he was an obsessed playwright, he established an organization for the purpose of launching plays called Rangasharada Pratisthan. His most notable works are the following plays:- Suvarna Tula in 1960, Madanachi Manjiri in 1965, Panditraj Jagannath in 1960, Mandarmala in 1963, Bawannkhani, Swarsamradni Jai Jai Gauri Shankar.
All these plays were performed on stage at Rangasharada Pratisthan. He served as the president of Marathi Sahitya Sammelan in 1993 in Satara. In his political career he was a Shiv Sena candidate. As a Shiv Sena candidate in the 9th lok Sabha from 1989 to 1991, he represented Mumbai North Central. Throughout his life, he was connected with some social-political organizations like Hindu Mahasabha and RSS. Both organizations represent the Hindutva ideology and are associated with their leaders like Veer Savarkar and Balasaheb. After living a memorable life, he passed away on 26 September 1996 at the age of 72 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
