Manjula Padmanabhan is a journalist, playwright, author and comic strip artist. Her works address disparities related to gender, science and technology. She was born on June 23, 1953, in Delhi, India. She belongs to a diplomatic family and grew up in Europe and South Asia. She attended a boarding school for her academic years. She had finished her graduation from Elphinstone College, Mumbai. Since college day, she has been very passionate about publishing her work and engaging in media-related activities. In her 20s and 30s, Padmanabhan continued to work as a journalist and book reviewer.

After the publication of Ali Baig's book Indrani and the Magical Jungle in 1979, she started her career as an illustrator. The female character Suki appeared in Padmanabhan's comic strip Doubletalk, which he created in 1982. She sent a proposal in writing to Vinod Mehta, the editor of The Sunday Observer, who ran her comic strip for many years. The Delhi newspaper published Suki six days per week from 1992 and 1998. Padmanabhan ceased making Doubletalk when Vinod Mehta left the magazine.

For her play Harvest, Padmanabhan received the first-ever Onassis Award. Based on her play, Govind Nihalani created the acclaimed film Deham. In addition to continuing to write and illustrate, Padmanabhan has also released numerous volumes of short stories. With the comic strip Suki Yaki for The Hindu's Business Line, Padmanabhan resumed drawing Suki-centric comics. ‘Getting There’ is an autobiography of her.
