Vasant Prabhu born as Vyankatesh Krishnarao Prabhu, was a sophisticated music composer and he also worked in the Marathi film industry. He was born on 19 January 1924 in Maharashtra, from a family originating from Panemangrul, near Mangalore, Karnataka. Following the lead of his brother he also became a child artist. In 1939, he had debuted in a few films as a child artist named Master Vasant, under the National Studios Banner. He was one of the voice artists in the chorus song for the movie “Comrades” (1939) and performed on screen for the song “wo chamak chamak kar taare” directed by Anil Biswas.
He also composed non-film Marathi songs referred to as “bhaav-geete”. He was a trained Kathak dancer since his childhood and desired to grab a role as an actor in a Marathi film. He was also a fine choreographer and had basic knowledge about music and beats. He landed an opportunity when he got signed by HMV for a Marathi film “Ram Ram Pavhana”, he composed and choreographed several songs for the film.
In 1953, he composed music for the film “Vaadal” under the banner Surel Chitra by Lata Mangeshkar. Vasant Prabhu has even collaborated with some of the evergreen singers like Lata Mangeshkar and famous lyricist P. Swalaram. In 1953, he also composed music for a Hindi film “Gharbaar.” From 1950 to 1968 he crafted music for around five stage dramas, 22 Marathi films, 110 bhavgeets, and also created his private albums. He passed away on 13 October 1968 at the age of 44.
