Surya Mohan Kulshrestha was born on 8th May 1953. Surya Mohan is also known by the name of Baba is a well recognized Theatre actor, director, and playwright. He is a well know theater director and widely popular for his creation of the Bhartendu Natya Academy of Dramatic Arts. Surya has also contributed to the foundation of the NIPA Rang mandali theater group. He has served as a director for more than a hundred plays in the whole span of his career. His great talent has not just been in the boundary of India but has widely spread in countries like Pakistan, Denmark, US, Finland and much more.
Born in a small village of Lucknow his parents were Girija Devi and Kameshwar Nath. His first film was The Bypass in 2003. Based on the story of two violent smugglers and a corrupt cop somewhere in Rajasthan. It was very well designed and portrayed to the audience. The short movie casts well-known actors like

, in the lead roles. Surya's another very well appreciated short movie was Monsoon Shoot starring Neeraj Kabi, Vijay Varma, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Like the previous even this one based on the life of a cop, but in this, the police was on his first assignment and the tough discussion and the skills he has to show in it.
He has experimented in all the field and was best known for his work in the field of various genres like Realism, Indian Folk and Classical, Farce, Comedy, Absurd, Street plays, Abstract and Brechtian. His best Indian classical drama plays include Kund Mala, Bhagwat-ajjukeeyam, in folk plays he has delivered a masterpiece like Veer Lorik, Dulari Bai, Ramleela. His extraordinary technique of A Minimal Theatre, which is based on actors and the content of the script were well appreciated and look up by everyone.
His modern plays like Aadhe-Adhure, Ashadh Ka Ek Din and Vasaansi Jeernani were a huge hit and his western plays include Brecht's Caucasian Chalk Circle, Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare, Sartre's Men Without Shadows, Maxim Gorky's Enemy, Sophocles' Oedipus, Ibsen’s Ghost and many more. The work done by him in his plays and concept of it is usually based on the dark theme and the hard truth of the society. The themes have also shown and discussed the contemporary issues that are faced in the society, leaving the audience and viewers in a deep thought about the things going up in the society.
He got married to Nilam. Surya has two sons, Tuhin Kulshrestha, and Nitin Kulshreshtha. He has won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Theatre in the category of Direction.
