Kang made a comeback in the entertainment business in 2019 with the KBS2 TV series When the Camellia Blooms, co-starring actress Gong Hyo-jin. The drama had excellent ratings and was the highest-rated miniseries of 2019. It also earned Kang a slew of awards and critical praise, including the Baeksang Arts Award for Best Actor – Television. Kang began his obligatory military duty at the Nonsan Korean Army Training Center on September 11, 2017. Kang was honored for his outstanding performance throughout basic training during the conclusion ceremony on October 24. Kang was named honorary ambassador of the Military Manpower Administration on February 22, 2019.
