Hitendra Ghosh is an Indian sound designer who works predominately in the Hindi film industry. Hitendra Ghosh is a two-time winner of a national award for Best Audiography for the films Ek Pal (1985) and Game (2011) and won the National award for Best Sound Recording for the movie Junoon in 1978.
Hitendra Ghosh was born in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. His parents were art teachers at The Scindia School, so he completed his schooling in the same institution. Hitendra's father passed away when he was seven years old. His mother, the sole breadwinner of the family, took care of Hitendra throughout his childhood. When Hitendra was seventeen, she passed away.
He enrolled in an engineering college and joined a part-time work to compensate for his education. Hitendra worked as an ADC for three years and completed his degree. Hitendra moved to Delhi and joined in Central Public Works Department. He did not like the job they assigned him and felt he needed to do something better than that. Hitendra saw an advertisement for a sound engineering course provided by Pune Film Institution. He decided to apply for it and got into the program after clearing aptitude tests.
Hitendra took tuitions for school kids to pay for his sound designer program, which was expensive. He used to play the Bongo drum during those times. When Hitendra was in the middle of his last examinations, he managed an opportunity to work as a sound recorder for a documentary feature. Indian film director, Shyam Benegal was once Hitendra's examiner at Pune Film Institution. When his exams are over, he advised Hitendra to visit him.
Hitendra then moved to Bombay to work with Shyam's Hindi film 'Nishant' on the sound design department. ItbecameHitendra's first Hindi feature film. Hitendra did freelancing work for a while. Then, he joined Raj Kamal Studios, where Hitendra started functioning as the sound mixer. He has won three film fare awards for the sound department and two International Indian Film Academy Awards for Best Sound Re-Recording. In 2008, Hitendra awarded for Technical Excellence at the Bombay International Film Festival. As of 2017, he has worked in more than 3,500 films in the sound design, sound mixing department, which could potentially be a Guinness world record.
