Shahir Vitthal Umap was a legendary Indian Folk singer born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. He took his last breath while performing at an event in Deekshabhoomi, Nagpur, in 2010 at the age of 80. As a follower of BR Ambedkar Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, commonly known as B.R. In an unconscious state, he was rushed to the hospital immediately, where he was declared dead.

A typical music form, “Shahiri,” was picked up by Vitthal at a young age, and eventually, he established himself as a renowned singer and performer. Our country barely appreciates folk music. In an attempt to give this art form its recognition, Vitthal struggled throughout his life. Born in a Mumbai Chawl, he traveled all over the state to revive the lost folk traditions. The central theme of his art revolves around Ambedkar's anti-caste ideology. He majorly focused on real social issues in his works, questioning the orthodox mentality and traditions of Indian society. His outlook was progressive and revolutionary in terms of his propagation of social equality.

Honored with first prize at the “International Folk Music” and “Art Festival” at Cork, Ireland, Vitthal had bagged many prestigious awards in his name. “Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar,” “MATA Puraskar for Best Actor for JamBhul Akhyan,” and “Maharashtra Shasan Sanskrutik Puraskar” can be added to the list. He received a nomination for the “Best Actor” category for his powerful performance in a Marathi film named “Tingya.” He was also part of several stage shows like “Me Marathi, Jambhool Akhyan, and Khandobacha Lagin.” As a composer, he worked in various films and daily soaps.
