Master Saleem is the well-known singer behind Bollywood hit songs like ‘Mast Kalanadar’ and ‘Rola Pe Gaya’ etc. Born as Saleem Shahzada, he is also known as Saleem Shahkoti and was born on July 13th, 1982. He was born to renowned Sufi artist Ustad Puran Shahkoti and Bibi Mathro in Shahkot, in the city of Jalandhar in Punjab. His father was a well-known Sufi singer and was a mentor to many Punjabi folk sensations such as Jasbir Jassi, Hans Raj Hans, Sabar Koti, etc. When Saleem was six years old, he decided to follow his father’s footsteps and began to learn from him. Saleem made his debut into his singing career when he was just eight years old. He was given an opportunity to perform live for the then newly opening Doordarshan Channel in Bathinda, Punjab. He performed ‘Charkhe Di Ghook’, song written and composed by himself and launched himself into the singing career and gained his name, ‘Master Saleem’. He later appeared in ‘Jhilmil Taare’ one of the various television shows in which he made an appearance. Majninder Singh Goli, who was his father’s good friend, helped him launch his album under Sur Taal’s label and was called ‘Charkhe Di Ghook’. During the latter years of the 90s, Saleem had lost his voice due to his growth, and this had given him a setback in his career. He made his entry into Bollywood after Shankar Mahadevan, a well-known singer in the industry had seen him perform at a religious show that was telecast from a temple (Devi Talaab Mandir) located in Jalandhar. In the year 2007, he was the playback singer for the hit song, ‘Mast Kalandar’ making his debut for Sajid Khan’s ‘Heyy Babyy’.
