Saby Singh

One of the most talented Indian musicians in the Indie genre is Saby Singh. Hailing from Anantnag in Kashmir, Saby Singh was born on 19th June 1993. He was brought up in a Sikh family and had musical influences around him. His mother was a singer and his grandfather was a Raagi. Listening to his grandfather’s hymns and classical music at home, had a profound effect on him. Being raised in a Sikh family, Gurbani Kirtan was an essential part of their life and this laid the foundation for his musical beginnings. He learnt Hindustani Shastriya Sangeet and the Western classical genres. The influences of these genres can be seen and experienced in his beautiful music. Saby Singh is a gifted artist who can skilfully play the guitar, drums, tabla, flute and the harmonium. His music is powerful, ardent and straight from the heart. His early experiences of Kashmir, being the “not-so-popular” guy and being unconventional, have shaped his songs and personality.

Growing up, Singh enjoyed the 80s and early 90s pop, jazz and R&B. Classic and hard rock were a huge influence, as Saby Singh spent hours delving into the heavy, dark lyrics of Pink Floyd and Deep Purple. He would often get emotional and get compelled to write songs to express his feelings. In his characteristic manner, Saby’s lyrics are deep and moving, not cheerful or happy. Themes of despondency and inner conflict are prominent in his music, set against the soulful tones of the acoustic guitar.
