Shilpa Rao

Shilpa Rao is perhaps the youngest Bollywood singer who made her debut with her song “Tose Naina’ from the movie ‘Anwar’ which was composed by music director Mithoon. This singer was a discovery of music composer Mithoon. She got the chance to sing her debut song when she was studying in college. It is said that her father groomed up this singer when she was young. She had her first training from her father S. Venkat Rao who was a music graduate.    Shilpa was born on 11 April 1984 in Jamshedpur. The singer found her initial opportunity by performing Live with singer Hariharan at different venues. She even won a national level hunt contest in New Delhi. It was Shankar Mahadevan, one of the judges in the contest, who advised her to shift her base in Mumbai to get a break in singing. It was Mahadevan who even recommended this singer’s name to sing some jingles for commercial advertisements. Later, she had given her vocal for few cosmetic brands such as Sunsilk, Anchor Gel, and No Marks and even for the confectionary brand like Cadbury's Munch.  This young singer always focuses on the sentiment and mood of the raga. Also, she also has greater emotive appeal because of the use of her voice modulation in singing swaras.  Her singing presentation style and her overall approach to singing thus do have a direct appeal to listeners. Shilpa has sung some famous songs from prominent music directors for successful movies. They include ‘Paa’ for composer Ilaiyaraaja, ‘JabTak Hai Jaan’ for A.R. Rahman, ‘Lootera’ for Amit Trivedi, 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' for Vishal-Shekhar and 'Dhoom 3' for Pritam, etc.  Shilpa’s most famous songs include “Mudi Mudi“ (Paa) and "Khuda Jaane" (Bachna Ae Haseeno).  She also rendered a duet song "Malang" with Siddharth Mahadevan, and it was featured on Aamir Khan and Katrina Kaif for ‘Dhoom-3’, and the soundtrack was indeed a big hit. The song had Sufi influences and needed 'deep-throated' singing, and Shilpa did justice to this song. Her another song ‘"Le Chal Mujhe’ from the movie ‘NH-10’ for music composer Anirban Chakraborty was a tough solo song indeed.  Besides singing in movies, Shilpa also had participated in Coke Studio (season-2) and earned the best music debut singer title in the year 2014 for her song ‘Dum Dum.' Her vocal is best suited for Classical based beats and modern upbeats.
