Kala Ramnath is an Indian violin prodigy, born on 29th May 1967 in Chennai, Tamilnadu, to Malathy and T.N. Mani. She hails from a family with lineages of musicians, Mewati Gharana, including violinists Prof. T. N Krishnan and Dr. N. Rajam. Introduced to the world of violin at the age of two and a half, and performing from the age of twelve, she has reinvented the art of handling the instrument and earned the name 'the singing violin' for her violin. She has been acclaimed as one of the world's 50 best instrumentalists, by UK-based Songlines magazine, which also selected her album ‘Kala’ as one of the 50 best recordings. Her compositions have appeared on the Grammy-winning album ‘In 27 Pieces’ and the Kronos Quartet’s ‘50 For The Future’ and featured on the Grammy-nominated Miles from India project. She also bagged a solo essay in the third edition of the Encyclopedia-Rough Guide to World Music. She was added to the list of 100 most Influential Asians by The New York Press.
She has contributed to the Hollywood soundtracks in the Oscar-nominated Blood Diamond and many more. She was awarded Sangeet Natak Academy Puraskaar, Rashtriya Kumar Gandharva Sanman, and the Pandit Jasraj Gaurav Puraskar . She conducts lectures and workshops regularly, and helps the lives of the underprivileged with her foundation 'Kalasree'.
