Born on 25th November 1937 in Pune, Ashok Damodar Ranade was a musician. Ashok Ranade was trained in traditional Hindustani Art music. He was trained under Pandit Gajananrao Joshi of Gwalior, Jaipur, Agra Gharana, Pandit Pralhad Ganu of Agra Gharana, Pandit Laxmanrao Bodas of Gwalior Gharana, and Prof. B R Deodher of Gwalior Gharana. He founded the University Music Centre, Mumbai and also served as a director. It is now known as the Department of Music, University of Mumbai. He has written many books in Marathi and English language; they are considered to be the most authentic and thoughtful sources of cultural musicology. He received many state and national awards for his contribution.
