Arun Dravid

Dr. Arun Dravid was born on October 3, 1943. He is a senior representative of the Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana. He has a Ph.D. from MIT in the United States and holds a gold medal From IIT in Bombay presently Mumbai. He serves as Vice President of Jacobs Engineering Group, the California-based international engineering firm, and Chairman Emeritus of Jacobs Engineering India. Dr. Arun Dravid had his early training from Abdul Majid Khan, an Alladiya Khan student and Kesarbai Kerkar's lifelong sarangi accompanist. Abdul Majid Khan helped Dr. Arun Dravid establish a strong foundation for the gharana's gayaki in him. From 1955 to 1960, he studied under him before taking a brief hiatus from music to focus on his studies.

When he finally decided to return to music after a year, he approached Mogubai Kurdikar, who introduced him to her famous daughter, Kishori Amonkar. He then became Kishoritai's first official disciple and remained close to her for a long time. He occasionally received useful advice from Mogubai Kurdikar as well. Arunji's music strikes a balance between his guru's bhava-dominant style and the structural elegance unique to the Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana. His music exhibits the shuddha aakar and tans typical of this Gharana. He may be the only male musician of that generation to have kept and performed the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana's gayaki in its original form. He performs light-classical genres like Thumri and Natya-Sangeet in addition to raag-sangeet. The future generation is being taught by Dr. Arun Dravid's knowledge of the gharana's gayaki.
