Kanu Roy was an actor and music composer of Indian origin. He was born on December 9, 1912, in Calcutta, West Bengal. He worked in the Hindi and Bengali film industry for over forty years. He belonged to a financially poor background and used to take up menial jobs to support himself. Kanu soon went to Bombay in search of better work opportunities and became associated with the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) as a music director. During his time there, he became acquainted with Sahil Chowdhury and gained experience in music direction by assisting him. He also played small roles in movies to earn money.
Some of his movies include Naughty Boy (1962), Kismet (1943), Munimji (1955), Mahal (1949), Jagriti (1954), Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957), Bandini (1963), Kissi Se Na Kehna (1983), Ham Sab Chor Hain (1956) and many more. He is famous for his composition of Babul Mora Naihar Chhooto Jaye sung by Jagjit Singh Jagjit Singh is ‘Ghazal King’ in Indian music. He also gave music for films such as Uski Kahani (1966), Griha Pravesh (1979), Shyamla (1980), Tumhara Kalloo (1975), Sparsh (1980), and others. He died on December 20, 1982, in Bombay due to cancer. He did not get married throughout his life.
