She was born on 2nd March 1932 in Mumbai. Poornima's dad, a Tamil Brahmin Ram Sheshadri Ayangar, was one who used to control accounts at Kiku Bhai Desai's office. Poornima's mom was from a Muslim household of Lucknow. At home other than her parents they were six sibling’s one son and five sisters including Purnima. In the 1930'sera, Poornima's oldest sister Shirin had also acted in films like 'Bambai Ki Sethani' (1935), 'Khwab Ki Duniya' (1937), 'State Express' (1938). According to Poornima that period's well-known cinematographer Raman B. Desai, who also happened to be their neighbor, had proposed Poornima 'Radha's' character in his Gujarati flick Radheshyam. For the film, her older sister Shirin gave her the nickname'Poornima' in place of her original name Meher Bano.
The film 'Radheshyam' publicized in the year 1948 and at that time Poornima was just 16 years of age. According to Poornima the first Hindi film that she did was Kedar Sharma's 'Thes' where she portrays the second main character. Starring Bharat Bhushan and Shashikala in the lead personalities, this film was publicized in the year 1948. According to the high-ranking historian Shri Harish Raghuwanshi, in the year 1947 i.e. a year earlier Thes. Poornima had performed in two Hindi movies 'Manager' and 'Tum Aur Mai'. Later in 1948 other than the flick 'Radheshyam' she had also labored in Director Raja Yagnik's Gujrati starter Saavaki Maa. While Raman B. Desai’s Gujarati and Hindi multi-lingual film 'Narad Muni' and Kedar Sharma's 'Thes' could not make much box office impact, Producer Bhagwan Dass Varma's movie 'Patanga' confirmed to be very popular.
Created by C.Ramchandra, two compositions of this melodic hit picture 'Dil Se Bhula do tum Hamein' and 'O Jaane Waale Tune Armanon kiDuniya Loot Li' were recorded on Poornima and after the film's announcement, Poornima’s timetable became very frantic. Having lodged afar from performing for three years, Poornima resolved to go back to acting just so that she could soothe the monetary situation at her own house. Poornima's hubby Bhagwan Dass Varma was a famous Director of his period who had many fruitful movies like Patanga, Aurat, Parvat, and Pooja under his flag of Varma Films. Bhagwan Dass Varma deceased in 1962. According to Poornima, she performed in almost 200 movies in a career with a span of more than 38 years. Her only son operated in Air India. Shaqeela and Saira Bano are her close acquaintances. Because Shaqeela and Saira Bano stay nearby Poornima's household, they keep meeting quite frequently.
