Known for his skill to inculcate the Indian textile and craftsmanship with European trend in clothes, Tarun Tahiliani is the co-founder of Ensemble, along with his wife, Sailaja Tahiliani. Ensemble was founded in 1987 whereas the Tahiliani Design Studio in 1990. Born in Mumbai in a Sindhi family, Tarun's father was Admiral R.H Tahiliani, who was with the Indian Navy. Due to this, his family, including his sister Tina, kept moving from place to place, depending on his posting. When his father was posted in Delhi, he attended The Doon School in Dehradun and passed out from there in the year 1980. After finishing school, he joined St. Stephen's College as an honours student in Delhi.
However, he dropped out soon after that since he did not find the matter interesting. A year later, went to the United States and studied at Vassar College,
, before finally attaining a degree in Business Management from Wharton Business School, University of Pennsylvania. It is at this University that he met his wife Sailaja, who was an Economics student there. Although he joined his family business on his return to India, he and his wife soon opened the multi-designer boutique in 1987. There were several designers whose clothes were featured in the store, such as , Rohit Khosla, label Anaya, Neil Bieff, etc.
However, he was still an untrained designer. He went to study fashion designing at Fashion Institute of Technology in New York; he shifted his business to Delhi. His work was first noticed only when Jemima Khan, a British heiress wore his outfit to Imran Khan's wedding. Today, after more than two decades, his brand Ensemble has stores in both Mumbai and Delhi. The business is run by Tarun as well as his sister Tina who also joined the same line in 1990.
