Known for her unique and unconventional approach, Renu Savant is a two-time National Award-winning Indian director. Apart from direction, she has also ventured in the fields like writing, editing, and cinematography. Based on Mumbai, an open-minded parent who encouraged her to take up the things she desired, brought Renu Savant up. After completing her school studies, she pursued her Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from Ramnarain Ruia Autonomous College, Mumbai. Further, she did her Master’s degree in English Literature at the University of Mumbai.

Initially, Renu Savant chose journalism as her career path and worked as a journalist in Indian Express. After gaining experience from everything, Renu Savant decided to study filmmaking and enrolled in the film direction department at Film and Television Institute, Pune. During her time at FTII, Renu Savant directed the short film Airawat. The short films show the imaginary world of a small-town girl. She won her second National Award in 2014 for her short film Aaranyak in the category National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Film Direction at the 62nd National Film Awards. Other than the national awards, she has also won a student National award for her short films. Following a successful stay at FTII, Renu Savant bagged the early career fellowship from the School of Media and Cultural Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. In 2017, Renu Savant released her first full-length document named Many Months in Mirya, which shows the time and life of the Mirya village in Ratnagiri district.

The four-hour-long documentary made many heads turn towards her with fascination. For the short film, Renu Savant got honored by the Cesar Academy of Cinema Arts and Techniques at UNESCO. Many Months in Mirya won several awards, including the Kerala State Chalchitra Academy’s John Abraham National Award in 2017. They have also screened it at many film festivals in and around India like Paris, Rome, etc. Renu Savant directed her next documentary Mod Bhaang (The Ebb Tide), based on the life of the fishermen of Mirya Village. In 2020, she shot the short documentary called Brave Revolutionary Redubbed, which reviews a scene from the movie Krantiveer in connection to the global pandemic of 2020.
