Merajur Rahman Baruah is a director and an independent documentary filmmaker. He has completed his master's degree in Sociology and dip in Mass Communication Jamia Millia Islamia, Mass Communication Research Centre. He also completed a Film Appreciation Course from ‘The Film and Television Institute of India’ (FTII). He is known for making films on issues ranging from Art and sculptures to conflict, sexuality, environmental issues, and communalism. Most of his movies are made to break the stereotypes related to gender, caste, and religion and make a difference in the society we live in. The documentaries Merajur Rahman has worked on so far are: "Pagent in Painted Scenes," "Breaking Silence," "Song of the Sanctuary," "Beyond the Zero Line," "Shifting Prophecy," "Essential Arrival: Michigan's Indian Immigrants in the 21st Century," and “The Price of Providence.” He has won several awards for his documentaries. Rajat Kamal won the 55th National Award for the documentary "Shifting Prophecy."
It was the national award for the Best Film on Social Issue category. Merajur Rahman won the Best Director Award at 'Hyderabad International Film Festival' for the same film in the year 2008. The documentary "Shifting Prophecy" is based on the struggles of Muslim Women living in Tamil Nadu. The film’s story revolves around a woman named 'Sharifa Khanam' who is trying to build a Mosque for Muslim Women. This film highlights the unfolding of the Rural Muslim Women’s Movement in Tamil Nadu. Muslim women were questioning gender violence and poverty and fighting for survival, equality, and women's rights. It explores what the future holds in store for Sharifa Khanan and thousands of other women of Tamil Nadu who were a part of this movement and how their lives turned out to be. He also won the Commonwealth Vision Award 2006 from the 'Royal Commonwealth Society United Kingdoms' for his film "Beyond the Zero Line."
