Gyan Mukherjee was an Indian film director and screenwriter who worked in Hindi cinema. He was born on 30 September 1909 in Banaras, Uttar Pradesh, India. He graduated with a degree of science and cultural journal. His Hard work and interest in directing grabbed him his first movie Geeta [1940] , based on the trope of “Crime doesn’t pay”. He went on to direct films like Jhoola [1941] , Chal Chal Re Navjavan[1944] , Sangram[1950] and Samsheer [1953].
He introduced formulae like lost and found, double roles, antihero, and many more. Mukherjee’s best film is considered to be Kismet [1943], which is one of the most influential films of Indian cinema. This film ran for a record-breaking three years eight months at Roxy Cinema in Calcutta, cementing its place in Hindi cinemas and also became the first Indian film to earn one crore. He only directed ten films in his career with last one being “Shatranj” [1956]. Mukherjee died on 13 November, 1956 in Calcutta, West Bengal at the age of 47.
