Gyan Sahay is a renowned director of photography in many acclaimed TV series and documentaries too. He worked as an assistant to Govind Nihalani Born on 19 August 1940, Govind Nihalani hails from >> Read More... and even V.K. Murthy. The actor hails from Patna. He had the passion for the camera work and did casual photography. But his deep interest took him to Pune Film and Television Institute where he did his degree.
After his graduation, he landed up in Doordarshan where he worked as a casual stint photographer. But he did not continue in Doordarshan nd he left the job and went back to Pune where he joined an FTII institute. His salary was Rs 900 and thus, every weekend he used to meet movie veterans in Mumbai. Thus, Gyan Sahay came across Govind Nihalani who has been an assistant to V K Murthy (cinematographer of Guru Dutt’s 'Pyasa'). Nihalani took a test for Gyan and had kept him under his training for 5 years. During this time, he became an assistant cameraman to Shyam Benegal’s project ‘ Bhumika Bio coming soon... >> Read More... ’ while performing the camera work, he understood the basic concepts of movie shots which were 'semi color' and even 'color' shots.
After this Shyam Benegal’s project, Gyan got to shoot some scene in Richard Attenborough’s ‘Gandhi’ where he worked as a second unit cameraman. It was a period when many TV serials were shot for Doordarshan and he came closer to the filming of some noted TV serials. He understood the role of 'multiple–camera' shots and eventually became a knowledgeable cameraman for 'multiple-camera' set-ups. Soon he shot some reality program show for Doordarshan such as ‘SA RE GA MA’ and even ‘ Meri Awaz Suno Meri Awaz Suno is a musical talent hunt reality sh >> Read More... ’.
Later, he progressed to Bhojpuri cinema world and even became an ultimate producer for a TV show ’Nanhi Si kali’ which was telecast on Doordarshan. Gyan also worked as an assistant cameraman for two prominent Hindi movies ‘Vijeta’ and ‘Kalyug’.
