Roshan Kumari

Roshan Kumari is an Indian classical dancer, actor, and choreographer considered to be one of India's most eminent Kathak dancers. She was born on 24th December 1943 in Ambala, Haryana. Roshan’s parents are Choudhury Fakir Mohammed, a well-known Tabla player and Zohrabai Ambalewali, a renowned classical and playback singer. She is currently unmarried and lives in Mumbai. Roshan follows the "Jaipur Gharana" and founded the Nritya Kala Kendra in Mumbai, one of the most prominent academies in India teaching Kathak. She started learning Kathak under K.S. Moray and proceeded with her studies at the Maharaj Bindaddin School of Kathak in Mumbai under Sunder Prasad Ji. Roshan also studied Bharatnatyam with Mahalingam Pillai and Govindraj Pillai. She has performed for notable figures, including Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Nikita Kruschev, Hussein of Jordan, and the King of Nepal. In 1970, she performed in a documentary about the history and practice of Kathak by the Film Division of the Government of India. In 1984, the Government of India awarded her the Padma Shri, and in 1989, the Government of Bengal awarded her the Vishwa Unnyyan Samsad. In 1990, the Government of Maharashtra awarded her the Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar, and in 1993, the Kathak Kendra in Jaipur bestowed upon her the Man Patra honor. Sur Singer Samsad has also awarded her the Nritya Vilas honor. Apart from this, she also received the All India Bhuwalka Award in 2005 and the Hanumant Award in 2008.
