Jai Bhagwan is an Indian Boxing Champion, born on 11th of may, to a farming family in Haryana. His father is a state government employee. He is married to Meelu Lamba, (a dentist) in 2012. He belonged to an indigent family. Therefore, he used to borrow shoes & track suits from others, during the early days of his training. At the age of eleven, he joined the Sports Authority of India at Hissar.
Jai Bhagwan initially worked as a police constable in Haryana. Later, he worked in railways as a ticket examiner & then again in the police department as an inspector. He learned boxing under his boxing coach, Gurubaksh Singh Sandhu. He failed in the first qualifier round of Olympics Games, 2008 & his injury kept him away from the second qualifier. Then, he won a medal in 2009 World Championship & a silver medal in Asian Championship also. After achieving a bronze medal in the Common Wealth Games (2010); he obtained the post of Deputy Superintendent of Police.
People thought that his boxing career will come to end because of his bad performance at the Common Wealth Games, but at the AIBA World Championship in 2011, his performance made him reach the quarterfinals. Thus, he got a chance again to enter the Olympics in 2012. In the Olympic Game, he competed in the lightweight 60 kg men’s category & lost to Ghani Zhailauov in the pre-quarterfinals. He also appeared as a finalist of the popular Indian reality game show ‘Zor Ka Jhatka: Total Wipeout’ that aired on Imagine TV. Achievements: Jai Bhagwan is a two times Asian Championship Medallist & has also won the Arjuna Award for his performance.
In October 2015, Haryana Police has suspended him from his job because it was found in an inquiry that Jai Bhagwan demanded a bribe of Rs. One Lakh from a tycoon. As per the sources, he demanded the ransom to release three men caught for betting charges. Jai Bhagwan has been found guilty in this crime.
