Geeta Kumari Phogat was born on 15 December 1988 in Balali village of Charkhi Dadri district, Haryana, India. Geeta is a freestyle wrestler. She has won India’s first-ever gold medal in wrestling at the Commonwealth Games in 2010 held in
, beating Emily Bensted from Australia. She studied from Maharishi Dayanand University in Rohtak. At the starting of her career, she and her father, faced many problems as her village lacked proper facilities, and the mindset of people who opposed them became a hindrance in their path.
Her mother, Shobha Kaur, is a homemaker. She is the first Indian female wrestler to qualify for the Olympic Summer Games. Her father, Mahavir Singh Phogat, a Dronacharya Award recipient, is also her coach. She has represented India in World Championships at Strathcona County in 2012, Asian Championships in 2012 Gumi and Doha. Her sister Babita Singh Phogat and cousin Vinesh are also Commonwealth Games gold medalists. Ritu Phogat, her other sister, is also an international level wrestler and has won the gold medal at the 2016 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship. Sangita Phogat, her younger sister, is also a wrestler. She also has a younger brother named Dushyant (wrestler).
She married PawanKumar on 20 November 2016 and had their first child, Arjun, in December 2019. She has undergone rigorous training and practice at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports(NSNIS), Patiala, under the guidance of coach O.P.Yadav and foreign expert Ryan Dobo. Geeta met Aamir Khan on Aamir’s show “Satyamev Jayate,” for the first time where he interviewed the Phogat sisters. She became the Deputy Superintendent of Police in Haryana in October 2016. She has created many records and made Indians proud. Geeta is the inspiration for many women through her achievements.
