Amit Mahanti

Amit Mahanti, a talented editor, cinematographer, and filmmaker who was born and raised in New Delhi, has a passion for examining how politics, culture, and the environment connect in his films and video installations. He started his work as an independent researcher and filmmaker after completing his schooling at the AJ Kidwai Mass Media Research Centre at Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi. The wide and extensive collection of work by Mahanti includes movies like "Every Time You Tell A Tale," "Scratches On Stone," and "Malegaon Times." Critical acclaim has been accorded to these films, which have appeared at several film festivals all over the world, for their astute examination of societal concerns and their potent use of imagery.

Mahanti's abilities have not gone unnoticed, as seen by the various honours and fellowships he has received throughout the course of his career. After receiving the Charles Wallace India Trust Short-term Fellowship in 2016, he was able to conduct his study and engage in creative projects in the UK. Also, he has taken part in a number of notable residency programmes at locations like the Khoj Studios in New Delhi, the Parco Arte Vivente Experimental Institute of Contemporary Art in Turin, and the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art in Ujazdowski, Poland.

Mahanti recently began a special residence programme at Kran Film in Brussels, where he investigated the subject of work and its connection to cinema. In the course of his residence, he investigated the ways in which labour may be a potent creative and political force that develops its own expressions and is indicative of its involvement with the greater international order. This investigation concluded in a night of film screenings in Brussels' Beursschouwburg, when Mahanti's work was shown alongside that of other accomplished directors.
