Gulab Bai was an Indian stage performer and theatre artist. Culab Bai was born in 1926 in Balpurva, in the Farrukhabad district of Uttar Pradesh, in the Bedia caste. She started training in singing under the guidance of Ustad Trimohan Lal of Kanpur and Ustad Mohammad Khan of Hathras in 1931. At thirteen years of age, Gulab Bai joined the Nautanki troupe of Trimohan Lal, becoming the first female performer of the art form. Following that, she developed her unique style of singing, which earned her the name Guba Jaan. She soon found the Great Gulab Theatre in Kanpur, a successful drama troupe.
By the late 1960s, Gulab Bai groomed her younger sister Sukhbadan, also known as Nanda Guha, in her later years as a stage performer. Her daughter Madhu was also a notable singer. Gulab Bai was awarded the Padma Shri in 1990 by the Indian Government. She died at the age of seventy. Gulab Bai’s biography, titled “Gulab Bai: The Queen of Nautanki Theatre,” was documented by Deepti Priya Mehrotra.
