Ajit Pandey was an Indian singer, actor and politician born on 10th March 1937, in the small town of Lalgola, Murshidabad, West Bengal. He had done his schooling and undergraduate studies in the district itself. As a child, Ajit Pandey was interested in music and politics and as he grew older, he began to invest his time and passion into learning both. Ajit was into mass songs and folk tunes rather than classical music. In a career that spans over five decades, he had released over thirty albums in Bengali and won numerous awards both at home and abroad such as in Vietnam, Bangladesh and Russia.
‘Ora Amader Gaan Gaite Day Na,’ ‘Kaste,’ ‘Chashnala’ and ‘Amalkanti’ are some of his popular songs. Ajit Pandey was also involved in his state’s politics. He was a Member of the Legislative Assembly representing the constituency of Bowbazar. He died in Kolkata during the summer of 2013 due to a heart attack.
