Ria Patel is an Indian-Australian film writer. She was born to a Gujarati family in India, who later shifted to Australia. Being a Gujarati Indian, she often found herself an outsider in Australia. She studied at the New York Film Academy and used the feeling of being an outsider to motivate her work. She was creative as a child and loved arts and crafts, drawing, dancing, acting, and writing. She saw herself as an artist since the beginning of her academic years and wanted to be a part of the entertainment industry.

Initially inclined towards dancing, she later found acting as her first love. She would reenact scenes from films in front of her mirror. As her confidence grew, she began with drama classes and auditions for plays during school. After completing high school, she applied for a degree in health science and film school. She was accepted into both and chose to continue with the film school as her further education.

She usually creates films that promote women's empowerment and address taboo topics in Western and Indian Culture. Her filmography includes movies like Nice, Varta-Re-Varta, Sifter, and Fi and Me. She wrote and starred in a film named Trey Pops in 2020. She won the best actress award at the Virgin Spring CineFest Film Festival, Top Indie Film Festival, and South Film and Arts Academy Festival for the film. The film also won the Best Short Film award and was nominated for Best Writing and Best Humour.
