Dhiruben Gordhanbhai Patel is an author of Indian origins. She is a Gujarati poet, playwright, and translator. She was born in Baroda in Gujarat. Her father was also a writer and was associated with the Bombay Chronicle. She went to school at Podder School in Mumbai. She has Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Arts (English) to her credit. She studied at Elphinstone College and Bhavan College. After completing her studies, she pursued a career in teaching for a short span. She taught English classes in a college in Dahisar and later taught English Literature at Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan. Dhiruben was associated with Anand Publishing House before opening her own publishing house ‘Kalki Prakashan’ in 1979. She has written plays for stage and radio, poems, novels, and short stories.

Her novel ‘Agantuk’ was greatly appreciated. Dhiruben was awarded the Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak in 1980, K.M. Munshi Suvarna Chandrak in 1981, and Sahitya Gaurav Puraskar in 2002. Dhriuben’s novels include ‘Shimla Na Phool’ (1976), ‘Ek Bhalo Manas’ (1979), ‘Vamal’ (1980), ‘Andhali Gali’ (1983), ‘Ek Phool Gulabi Vat’ (1990), ‘ Paying Guest Paying guest serial belongs to the old 90s show. Some of her popular short stories include ‘Adhuro Call’ (1955), ‘Ek Lahar’ (1957), ‘Tadh’ (1976), and ‘Javal’ (2001).

Dhiruben’s only writing in English is a set of poems ‘Kitchen Poems’ which she recited at the Neemrana Literary Festival in 2002. This set of poems was later translated into Gujarati by her. Kitchen Poems was also translated into Marathi and German. She has also translated the famous novella ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’ written by Mark Twain into Gujarati. Her stories for children are also quite popular and include Doctor ni Fee, Minu ni Mojadi and Kaku Maku ane puchhadi ni Panchat among others. Dhiruben Patel currently resides in Santacruz in Mumbai.
