Diya Patel is a Taekwondo champion based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. She is one of the youngest Gujarati kids who won a bronze medal in the Second India Open International Taekwondo Championship in 2017, which was held at the Sawai Mansinh Indore stadium in Jaipur, Rajasthan. She later won a gold medal at the national level in the sub-junior category at the age of ten. Diya is a student of HB Kapadia school in Ahmedabad who started training in Taekwondo at the age of seven and trained under martial artist Mahendra Vankhedi.
She aspires to be an Olympic gold medallist, a pilot, and an actress when she grows up. Diya’s parents, Jignesh and Kinjal Patel, were worried about the instances of children being kidnapped and therefore believed that irrespective of how old a child is, he/she should be able to protect herself/himself. Therefore, they wanted Diya to get self-defense training, and that is why they insisted her to learn Taekwondo. Besides, Diya is a poster girl for the Beti Bachao Campaign in Gujarat and has also played the role of a daughter in a movie called Phir Usi Mod Par, which was about the issue of triple talaq.
Moreover, her inspiring sports journey has been depicted in a biopic called ‘Diya...The Wonder Girl which was released in 2019.
