Heidi is a Tamil language TV show that airs on Chutti TV, a 24-hour Tamil kids television channel from Sun TV, thrice every day from 10 am to 3 am, 2 am to 3 am, and 9 pm to 10 pm. It is actually a Japanese animated kids show called Heidi, Girl of the Alps, created in the year 1974. It aired in almost all Indian languages on the television. Heidi is a 5-year old girl who has lost her parents. She grows up with her Aunt until she gets a great opportunity in the city. The Aunt leaves Heidi with her formidable grandfather, who lives away from the village in the mountains.

The grandfather, who usually does not interact with people much, is taken by Heidi’s charming personality. He quickly grows responsible for her. However, his misanthropic nature keeps Heidi away from school. She became friends with a boy named Peter, who herds goats. She accompanies him sometimes to the pasture and to visit Peter’s grandmother, a blind woman. A few days later, Heidi’s aunt returns from the city with the news that she has an opportunity for Heidi in the city. Her grandfather does not like the idea, but her aunt lies to them and takes Heidi to the city. There she is appointed to be friends with a crippled girl named Clara. They become friends very soon. Heidi tells Clara about her hometown, and Clara loves it very much. Everyone in Clara’s house except Clara’s handmaiden likes Heidi.

She strictly instructs Heidi to stop talking about her home. Clara’s grandmother comes to visit her once and she instantly loves Heidi. She even teaches her how to read and write. Heidi keeps thinking about her home and slowly develops a sleepwalking disorder. Everyone in the house thinks it’s a ghost. One night they discover that it is Heidi and call a doctor. He says that it is important to take Heidi home as there is a chance for it to grow fatal. Clara objects to it, but her father promises to take her to visit Heidi. Her grandfather and Peter are overjoyed with having Heidi back. The grandfather learns about Heidi’s newfound interest in reading and enrols her in a school.

Clara asks her father to take her to Heidi, but he first asks the doctor to go there to check if it is good for Clara’s condition. The doctor declares that the mountains would actually improve Clara’s condition. After going to the mountains, Clara’s handmaiden keeps criticising the place because of all the animals and the lack of city-like facilities. Clara’s grandmother notices her pessimistic nature and sends her back to the city. Clara’s condition improves significantly to the level that she starts walking slowly. Her father then takes her back to the city with the promise that she would come back again.
